I've Always Wanted to Make an M:tG Cube Part 2

Two Fridays in, and I'm still going strong. So, I've taken a first pass at the Jumpstart 2020 Twobert Cube. You can see the first draft of the list at Cube Cobra. So, you may be asking: have you done it now? You've always wanted to build a cube, and now you have. The answer is, kinda. I'm going to spend time playtesting the cube with the playtest features on Cube Cobra. And, I'll do some things like picking out lands and sleeves and maybe some cubamajigs. But, before we put the cube to bed, and say I've done one of the things I've always wanted to do, I want to talk about how the cube was put together, talking through the choices made for each color.

White

Well, white was the easiest color to do. We only had three packets of white cards in the box. (Got to say, I was a little bummed that the box wasn't close to color balanced, but that's what you get with a randomized product.) So, we had to use the cards that we got. Basically, to make a 180 card Twobert, you need 27 cards of each color. You toss in 25 or so artifact cards, and 20 or so lands to "fix" your colors, and you've got yourself 180. With white, taking out duplicate cards, we have 27 cards. So, that's what we put in there. White has themes of +1/+1 counters and lifegain, and I put together a fun little black and white +1/+1 counter deck in my first bot draft of the cube

Red

Now, red was actually even tougher than white. With white, we had exaclty 27 cards left when we took out duplicates. With red, we had 24, so I had to go and dig through one of my boxes of cards to get us up to 24. I wound up adding Volcanic Dragon (to beef up the dragon theme), Charging Monstrosaur (because it fits the power level and synergizes with the dinosaur theme in green), and Act of Treason (because it's an effect I like, and there wasn't an effect like it otherwise)

Next week, I'll hopefully get some of the other colors taken care of. I had to actually make some choices with those, so there will be some more to talk about. I know I didn't have a lot of time to write this week, but the initial construction is done. Playtesting to come, and more construction chat.

I've always wanted to do this, and I'm glad that I finally am!

I've Always Wanted to Make an M:tG Cube Part 1

So, I don't know if this counts as a New Year's Resolution or not, but I've decided to do some of the things that I've always wanted to do this year. And, I figured giving myself a deadline of posting a blog about it every Friday will keep me honest. So, here's the first project. I've always wanted to make a Magic: the Gathering Cube. If you don't know what a cube is, go ahead and click  here  for a brief introduction. Now, I've fiddled around with this idea before. And, in fact, I've assembled a cube before. But, I didn't really build it. I just copied a list from somewhere, and while I had some fun playing with it, I never really took the steps to make it mine. And, if I'm honest, I never play it much anymore. So, this time, I'm making it on my own, and for me. I've also already gotten a head start on this, as I put it in motion before the new year actually started. Here's what we know about the project already: I'm going to...
